Have you ever heard something that really changes your perspective and outlook, something that cuts to the core and affects your soul? For me, this past Sunday was one of those times where I heard something that impacted me and, if put into daily practice, will effect dramatic change.
This particular sermon impacted me because of the relevance it has to Self Destruct. Self Destruct means to “Die to Self, and Life for Christ”. What does that mean exactly? What does that look like? It’s a life long pursuit. We’ll never fully exhaust the answer, but in our first Self Destruct devotional we address this question in depth and will continue to do so in future volumes. I hope this brief outline serves to help and encourage everyone in the daily process of dying to self as much as it did to me.
The sermon was given by my pastor, Milton Vincent, and is taken from Romans 11:36-12:8. Here are some of the points that really impacted me.
1. Get over yourself and be all about God.
For from him and through him and to him are all things” (Rom 11:36a). If we aren’t all about God, then we are are all about ourselves.
2. Know and be motivated always by the Gospel (Rom. 12:1)
3. Become a part of a fully surrendered community sacrifice to God.
- “…present your [plural] bodies [plural] a living sacrifice [singular]…” (Rom. 12:1)
- We are often afraid of dying to self, but there is life on the other side.
- To the world, it looks like we’re dying on the outside but it is ascending and living life to the fullest when you live for Christ.
- We were meant to live in community with other believers, commit yourself to a local body
4. Don’t let the world press you into the mold.
- “Do not be conformed to this world…” (Rom. 12:2a)
5. Be perpetually transforming (Dying to Self).
- “…but be transformed..” (Rom. 12:2)
- You’re never done changing
- Your focus should be on your own transformation
- Transformation is not something you do, it’s something you allow God to do.
- The change God wants to produce in you is really radical.
- We need God to revolutionize our lives.
6. Never stop renewing your mind.
- “…by the renewal of your mind…” (Rom. 12:2b)
- Renew means to refurbish…to bring in the new and throw out the old.
- Analogy: if you refurbished a room in your house with new furniture, you would not bring in the new furniture and leave the old in room as well…you would remove the old to make room for the new.
- We don’t need to just read the Bible..we need to be critical of ourselves. We need to renounce the wrong thinking in our lives.
Again, I hope you benefit from this as much as I did. As soon as I heard this message I thought the collabo shirt we did with The Wedding called “Renewed Mind” which is taken from the same passage of scripture. Be sure to check out the verses associated with each of our shirts, I know they help me tremendously as a constant reminder in my daily pursuit of dying to self.
