Juveniles riot at 13th Street Skate Park

On the very first official stop of our Self Destruct Tour, we had planned to visit the Yucaipa Skate Park in Yucaipa, CA.  When we arrived the code enforcement shut us down about 15 minutes after we arrived before we were even fully set up.  It was the last of a handful of set-backs we experienced that day.

As you may have read in earlier posts, the front-end of our trip was riddled with set-backs, but in the end God worked out everything for His glory and the tour was a major success.

Apparently we made such a commotion just by showing up to the skate park that we made the local paper!!  Check out this article written by the News Mirror.

On July 27, several juveniles were arrested and cite released to their parents following, what law enforcement called a “riot” at the Yucaipa Skate Park located on 13th Street.

Dozens of teens were at the park when a vendor who was promoting music began distributing food, T-shirts and miscellaneous products. This prompted more teens to arrive at the park and Yucaipa Code Enforcement was alerted to the growing crowd.

Code enforcement officers told the vendor he needed to leave since he did not have a permit. The vendor refused and the teens began to harass the officer. Law enforcement was called and deputies arrived at the scene.

According to officials, deputies called in for back up as the crowd continued to grow to over 100 juveniles, many who were reportedly unruly. Deputies announced from the patrol units’ PA system to disperse, which prompted boisterous response from some of the teens toward law enforcement. Once deputies began  making arrests, the juveniles quickly fled the area as well as the vendor who was the original cause of the disturbance.

Four juveniles were arrested for inciting a riot. No injuries were reported.

The facts are not entirely straight, but unfortunately the kids at the park did get unruly and some were arrested.  It was quite a scene and nothing like we’ve experienced at any other park in our history (and hopefully the last). We’ll make sure to get a permit prior to stopping here in the future.

The Miracle Trip

So many prayers have been answered on this trip, we’ve named it “the miracle trip”.  God is always faithful and He’s shown himself in many ways over the last week.

Once we arrived in Monterey we went to the Marina, CA skate park where a skater gave his life to the Lord!  There was only 1 kid at the park when we arrived, but after 30 minutes, we had a handful of kids that we were able to skate with.  We had some competitions, gave away some gear, and gave out devotionals.  It was great to share with kids one-on-one, and the Lord was definitely there.

Our time at Spirit West Coast was awesome too!  It was a long three days, but we met so many great people and made some great friends!  Our team was able to put on two skate competitions and two demos at the Bethel Skate Church skate park inside SWC.  We were able to pray with kids, people prayed for us, and our message of dieing to self and living for Christ was shared with thousands!

On the last day we met Pastor Dan for Calvary Chapel in Ojai, CA and he invited us to their Sunday night beach service.  A couple of our have never been to the beach, so we took to the day off yesterday and got some surfing lessons.  We had a great time with the people from Calvary Chapel and had an awesome worship service after dinner.  It was a blessing to be with fellow believers and to have them pray over us for the rest of our trip.

Today we’ll be heading to more skate parks, so stay posted!

A Tour to Remember

I’m sorry I haven’t been able to blog sooner, I know there are a lot of people who have been wanting updates from the Self Destruct Tour ‘09.  To say it’s been crazy would be a major understatement, but lets get on with the details.

So if you haven’t seen it on Facebook or Myspace, the first part of the tour was stricken with problems.  The team had blown out tires and some car trouble early on, then on Sunday one of our skaters dislocated and fractured his big toe while doing a skate run at a park in New Mexico.  The team was delayed for about 9 hours and the doctor there couldn’t set his toe because they weren’t qualified for it.  That night the team pulled over in the middle of the desert to pray and worship God because it was a major set back early on in the trip.  The team prayed for healing and that Jared would be able to skate before the tour was over!

Soon after the team got a flat tire in the middle of the desert, and then the spare blew out as well.  They managed to make it to Victorville the next day to get a replacement.  Once the new trailer tire was installed and they were ready to go, the team truck wouldn’t start. Bill “the boss” had to stay with the truck to get it fixed while the rest of team hooked up the trailer to the RV and took it to the “kick-off” event in Yucaipa along with Decked Out Boardshop and the Adio skate team.  Once we got there, the code enforcement shut us down within 15 minutes because we didn’t have an event permit.  Depsite our efforts to get a permit, they shut us down.  Just as things started to get a little hairy this huge Red Bull truck rolled in and created a huge commotion and the park people weren’t too happy.  By the end of the ordeal, three unruly kids got arrested and the whole park was shut down!

Not to be deterred and determined to put on an event, we finally made it to the Moreno Valley skate park and had a great event.  We were able to grill for the kids, do some competitions, bless the socks off of a few kids, and most importantly share Christ with them and hand out our devotionals.

In the mean time, Jared was taken to the Loma Linda hospital ER where they waited for 4 hours without being seen.  Bill’s truck was fixed (it turned out to be just a small little screw that was loose) and he went to the ER with Jared where they continued to wait.  Once they were finally seen and new X-rays were taken, the doctors couldn’t find a fracture!!  The Lord healed the fracture and all the doctor’s had to do was set his toe!  They finally left the ER around 12:30am on Tuesday morning.

Tuesday morning the team spent some needed time to sleep in and recover from the previous 72 hours of mayhem, but we got on the road and headed to Upland, Chino then San Luis Obispo.

Stay tuned for the rest of the story in a few days along with pictures from the tour!!!
